Peer Mentoring Scheme (PMS) was introduced in 2020 to facilitate first-year nonlocal undergraduate students and inbound exchange students to better adapt to the culture of Hong Kong and the university life. Through having a well-established student peer network, a more integrated and harmonious campus can be nurtured, thus benefiting all the students. PolyU has run 3 rounds of PMS with around 250 mentors and 490 mentees since its launch in Semester 2 of the academic year 2020/21.
Global Student Ambassador Programme*
The Global Student Ambassador Programme (GSAP) aims to encourage all PolyU
full-time undergraduate students in UGC-funded programmes to actively seek
opportunities to enrich their global awareness and experience. Through coaching,
training and a variety of activities, GSAP enhances participants’ intercultural
understanding, strengthens their leadership skills, and grooms them to become
culturally sensitive, open-minded and responsible global citizens who will act as
catalysts in promoting internationalisation and integration . By April 2022, a total
of 518 students have been recruited and nurtured as passionate and dedicated
ambassadors.
*GSAP is undergoing programme restructuring
and content revamp to strategically better suit
nowadays pressing challenges for youth development
and SAO’s enhanced vision and mission.

SAO and the Global Engagement Office, in collaboration with the Hong Kong
Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS), run an on-campus Blood Donation
Campaign every October since 2018. Over 550 students and staff members participated
in the blood donation campaign in 2021. Among the 414 successful cases of blood
donation, 72% or 299 of them were first-time donors. This meaningful campaign
fosters youth awareness and mission in saving lives through blood donation.
In recognition of PolyU’s continued support in driving blood donation on campus and
promoting a positive message to the public, Dr C K Lee, Chief Executive and Medical
Director of BTS, presented the “Elite Partnership Award 2021” to PolyU. Newly
launched in 2021, the award serves to recognise enthusiastic organisations that have
contributed to blood donation in Hong Kong.
SAO regularly organises Dean of Students’ talks with a view to encouraging and inspiring students to develop their full potential in all aspects of their lives. Renowned leaders, movers and shakers from different fields are invited to share lessons, insights and wisdom through their real-life stories. In the academic year 2021/22, three talks titled “Reborn as an Astropreneur”, “Bionic Human and Quest for Transcendence” and “Understanding the GBA through Understanding HKSAR and Mainland China” were held respectively in October and November 2021 and February 2022, attended by over 380 staff and students.
Student Talk Series on Deception and Scam Alerts
To combat scams and enhance students’ awareness of various deceptions and scams, SAO and the Chinese Mainland Students’ Association jointly organised a talk series. Held on 14 January 2022, the first talk targeted to keep Mainland students updated on the prevalent telephone deception scams and encourage them to form a caring network to take care of each other, thus minimising the chance from falling prey to fraud. This online talk, delivered by speakers from the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC) of the Hong Kong Police Force, was attended by around 70 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Anti-scam pamphlets and promotional gifts from the ADCC were provided to all students to serve as a reminder on how to identify and deal with spam and scam calls.
