University Sustainability Governance

About PolyU

PolyU was first formed as the Government Trade School in 1937. It developed into the Hong Kong Technical College in 1947 and the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1972, and eventually evolved into a government-funded tertiary institution in 1994. Owing to the collaborative strength of the University community, PolyU has made major inroads into research and education. When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out during the reporting year, the University leveraged its strength and research expertise to accelerate response and combat efforts, and worked with other institutions proactively. The University’s total research funding increased from HK$2,941million in 2018/19 to HK$3,192million in 2019/20, supporting 2,864 ongoing research projects.

PolyU operates 29 academic units under six faculties, namely, Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles, Faculty of Business, Faculty of Construction and Environment, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities, as well as two schools—School of Design and School of Hotel and Tourism Management. A variety of taught and research programmes are provided at doctorate, master’s degree, bachelor’s degree and higher diploma levels, with over 160 taught programmes offered in 2019/20.

Supported by technology breakthroughs in various aspects and the enhancement of educational resources, the University continues to improve its institutional competitiveness and talent development. As one of the world-leading universities, PolyU has been making breakthroughs in numerous research frontiers. PolyU has performed outstandingly in driving innovation to advance technologies, care for people and protect the environment.

With excellent resources and facilities, such as extensive library collections, research facilities and research centres, PolyU offers quality learning, teaching and research for staff and students. PolyU also prioritises the health and well-being of staff and students as one of our greatest concerns. We strive to provide catering and health services, a sustainable campus, leisure and sports facilities and welfare support on campus to the University community. These facilities and provisions enable the University to offer professional education services to our students from Hong Kong and overseas.

University profile 2019/20

During the reporting year, 26,245 students enrolled in both full-time and part-time academic programmes while 8,986 students graduated from our academic programmes in 2019. These programmes include doctor of philosophy, master of philosophy, professional doctorate, taught master’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, higher diplomas and other sub-degrees. The University had 5,256 full-time employees during the same period, retaining a relatively stable body of full-time staff compared to the previous year.

Note 1:  PolyU established the College of Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) to oversee the operation of two self-financed education units—the Hong Kong Community College (HKCC) and the School of Professional Education and Executive Development (SPEED).
