Occupational Health and Safety
PolyU strives to achieve zero workplace accidents. The Health, Safety and Environment Office (HSEO) formulates and implements all guidelines, procedures, programmes and codes of practice related to health, safety and environment (HSE) within the University. The Health and Safety Policy reaffirms our commitment to achieve the goal by maintaining and monitoring daily safety performance. To cultivate a safety culture among staff, the University provides relevant safety training on a regular basis.
Chaired by the Vice President (Campus Development and Facilities), the Health and Safety Committee oversees the implementation of HSE policies, while HSEO promotes safe practices and awareness of environmental health issues within the University. Regular seminars and engagement platforms are hosted to exchange ideas with Departmental Health and Safety Officers, which in turn drives continuous improvement to our OHS performance. HSEO publishes the “We-Safety” newsletter quarterly for staff and students to present safety practices and initiatives across the campus.
The University has joined the “Joyful@Healthy Workplace” programme since 2016, launched jointly by the Department of Health, Labour Department and Occupational Safety & Health Council, to promote mental and physical wellness among our staff. During the reporting year, a series of programmes on “Healthy Eating”, “Physical Activity” and “Mental Well-being” under the pandemic were developed, such as the online seminars of “Taking Care of Mental Health during COVID-19” and “Healthy Eating during COVID-19”.
HSE promotion
PolyU believes that effective communication facilitates knowledge transfer, resulting in an enhancement of HSE awareness and performance. HSEO delivers messages related to maintaining good posture, general HSE training, mental wellness, personal and environmental hygiene by designing a series of posters and sharing videos of relevant topics. By making changes in attitude and behaviour, staff are equipped to solve dynamic HSE problems in day-to-day operations in a systematic manner.
OHS recognitions
PolyU’s dedicated efforts in improving staff safety awareness and developing OHS management systems in the workplace are well recognised both locally and internationally.
