Building a Green Workplace Culture
The Campus Sustainability Committee and Campus Sustainability Office jointly launched the Green PolyU Awards – Green Office (GPA-GO) Programme in 2016, advocating sustainability governance to departments and offices. Aiming to build a green workplace culture, training opportunities are provided under the programme for staff members to acquire green knowledge and enhance internal communication.
Under the GPA-GO Programme, all departments and offices are requested to conduct Green Office Assessment as a way to evaluate their green office performance. Detailed Guidebooks and useful tools, such as a Paper Audit tool, are also available online to assist departments and offices in conducting self-assessment and evaluation. In addition, fact sheets on Sustainable and Healthy Workplace and Signage on Sustainable and Healthy Workplace are available to staff to promote a green office culture.
A Green Office Initiatives checklist was developed and shared online for staff to track their progress on achieving green targets. A total of seven aspects were covered, each with initiatives divided into three categories, namely, basic, advanced, and innovation.

To encourage the implementation of green practices, the University organised workshops, tours and other training sessions for all departments and offices. During the reporting year, a workshop on plastic-free lifestyle was held, during which participants were guided by the instructor to make food wrap with cotton fabric and natural beeswax as a substitute to plastic food wrap. In September 2019, a tour was organised to visit St. James’ Settlement Jockey Club Upcycling Centre to learn how local designers create new product designs with used or leftover materials. These training sessions inspired our staff members to practise waste reduction with knowledge and creativity.
