Strategic Planning Session with Students

Effective communication with students is always vital for the advancement of PolyU. To prepare for the University’s Strategic Plan, which covers a six-year period from July 2025 to June 2031, a Strategic Planning Session with Students was held on 15 May 2023 in hybrid mode to solicit opinions from students. Council members were also invited to attend the session as observers.  During the session, President Teng provided students with the background to the process, explained the University’s current positioning and latest achievements, reviewed the implementation of various strategic initiatives over the past few years and outlined the key strategic goals for the next phase of university development. Thoughtful questions and suggestions were also raised by students, including those about financial support for student programmes and space allocation for student organisations, which are possible issues for further deliberation during later strategic planning stages.  

PolyU constructs student hostel at Kowloon Tong to promote students’ whole-person development

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has created an innovative, research-focused environment for students and faculty members, reflecting our excellent reputation for quality teaching and research that addresses societal needs. To help enrich the learning experience for our students and ease the shortfall of student residential places, PolyU will construct four multi-storey student hostels at Tat Hong Avenue in Kowloon Tong, providing an additional 1,680 student hostel places and outdoor recreational space for students. The new student hostel will attract outstanding non-local students to study in Hong Kong, thus helping to broaden the horizons of our local students. The hostel is targeted for completion by 2028. The hostel groundbreaking ceremony was officiated by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President; together with members of the Council and the management. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng hopes that, with the completion of the student hostels at Kowloon Tong and Ho Man Tin, students will be given an opportunity to experience two years of hostel accommodation during the four-year period of their studies. He said, “Hostel life is an essential part of higher education and students’ holistic development. Apart from academic studies and extra-curricular activities, we hope our students will have a more fruitful university life through a wide range of group residential activities. Through bringing together students with same interest, hostel life can also help nurture research talents and young people who are excellent in sports, art and culture, leadership and community services and STEM.” The Kowloon Tong student hostel will be located on a slope on Tat Hong Avenue, with the four multi-storey buildings set to have nine to 15 stories with a total gross floor area of around 50,200 square metres. Pedestrian passageways, parking lots and student recreational facilities will mainly be located from the ground floor to the fourth floor; a public corridor connecting each building, shared spaces and some dormitory units on the fifth floor; and the remaining student dormitories on the sixth floor or above.

PolyU Student Flag Raising Team Inauguration Ceremony 2023/24

PolyU Student Flag Raising Team Inauguration Ceremony 2023/24 was held on 11 May 2023 at Logo Square. More than 60 participants, including guests from PolyU Central Management Team, Deans, other staff and students, witnessed this significant occasion and showed enthusiastic support to the Team. Officiating at the Ceremony, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, PolyU President, expressed his warmest congratulations to the members of the inaugural Student Flag Raising Team. He highlighted the Team's diversity and passion for community service, and emphasised that PolyU is committed to nurturing future leaders with a strong affection for the Nation and sense of social responsibility. Mr So Yan Ching Miracle, Chairman of the PolyU Student Flag Raising Team Committee, spoke of his hope that the Team would uphold a spirit of diligence, perseverance and patriotism through flag raising activities. Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), and Dr TL Yip, Acting Dean of Students, then presented appreciation certificates to those Team members who have been promoted to Advance Members, as well as certificates of Acknowledgement and Appreciation to Committee members.

Hybrid PolyU Career Fair 2023 (March)

Themed “Connecting with Employers to Nurture Future Talents”, the Hybrid PolyU Career Fair 2023 highlights PolyU’s robust partnership with industries that nurtures future leaders for society. In the presence of various guests of honour, the Fair’s opening ceremony was officiated by Prof. Ben Young, PolyU’s Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), and tokens of appreciation were presented to long-term employers as well as diversity and inclusion supporters. The physical Fair was held successfully from 28 to 31 March on PolyU campus and the virtual one from 28 March to 30 April. Apart from around 1,200 job openings provided by nearly 280 employers from different sectors and industries, the Fair also featured over 30 career talks and senior executive sharing sessions, which enabled students to gain industry insights and career information from organisations including the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resources Management, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, The Hong Kong Institute of Bankers, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Over 40 career advice sessions were also conducted to help students optimise their job hunt strategies and CVs.

Two PolyU students won the ‘For Our Future Scholarship’ 2022/23

Two PolyU students won the ‘For Our Future Scholarship’ 2022/23. CHAN Tsz Kwan, Anson from Department of Building and Real Estate and KWOK Hin Chi, Haley from Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering were two of the 15 awardees from 11 local tertiary institutions this academic year. The 'For Our Future Scholarship', offered by The Greater Bay Area Homeland Youth Community Foundation, aims to recognise local students’ outstanding academic performance and dedication to community service. diverse talents and dedication to community service.  This year, nearly 210 applications from 13 local institutions were received.   The Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 26 April 2023.  Prof. Albert Chan, Dean of Students, also attended the Ceremony to share the joy with the two awardees. 

PolyU Sports Teams Bravo — Five-time Grand Slam Champions

PolyU's Sports Teams once again achieved remarkable results in the 2022-2023 Inter-collegiate Competition organised by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China. The Teams managed to bring home sixteen championships, as well as ten 1st runners-up and three 2nd runners-up places in the thirty-three sports events in which they participated. They won the Yearly” Men’s and Yearly Women’s Overall Championships for the fifth time in a row. In addition, sixteen PolyU students were named “Most Valuable Player” or “Individual Champion”, recognising their impressive performances in their respective events. The University held an award ceremony on 25 April to recognise the efforts of these student athletes and celebrate their remarkable achievements! 

PolyU’s Got Talent × CMSA × KSA × HDT K-POP Random Dance Challenge

On 4 April 2023, in collaboration with Chinese Mainland Students’ Association (CMSA), Korean Students’ Association (KSA) and Hall Dance Team (HDT), PolyU’s Got Talent (PGT) held its first-ever K-POP Random Dance challenge at Logo Square. The venue was transformed into a mass stage welcoming the PolyU students from diverse cultural backgrounds to showcase their dance talent. PolyU’s Got Talent focuses on bringing Arts, Culture, and Talents for Sharing to the community. The Programme not only provided a platform for students to showcase their dance talents, but also fostered friendship and cheerful memories among our vast global participants, facilitated cross-cultural integration, promoted student inclusion, and strengthened multicultural exchange to which the University is committed to.

PolyU admits 24 outstanding athletes through SALSA Scheme

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is committed to promoting the dual-track development of young athletes in sports and academic pursuits. This year, 24 outstanding athletes have been admitted to PolyU under the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission (SALSA) Scheme, and will embark on their undergraduate studies in the 2023/24 academic year. The newly admitted student-athletes have achieved remarkable results for Hong Kong in athletics, badminton, boccia, fencing, gymnastics, swimming, speed skating, track cycling and martial arts, among others, in international and regional tournaments. They will be enrolled in a wide range of undergraduate programmes, including physiotherapy; medical laboratory science; management and marketing; and language sciences, translation, and speech therapy. PolyU offers over 200 scholarships to student-athletes every year in recognition of their distinguished achievements in sports, and provides residential college accommodation to aid their development through hostel life. In addition to receiving a scholarship of as much as HK$400,000 during studies, eligible student-athletes admitted through the SALSA Scheme will be given individual mentorship in academic work, flexibility in learning and study assessments, extension of study periods and more, offering these students comprehensive support to facilitate their holistic development. Prof. Kwok-yin WONG, Vice President (Education) of PolyU welcomed the 24 student-athletes to the University and said, “PolyU has been supportive of whole-person education and sports development. We hope the student-athletes not only shine in sports but are also able to receive high-quality education, which will provide them with more opportunities to succeed in their future endeavours. We also look forward to seeing them apply their sporting spirit in classes and making a positive impact on their peers.” Among the admitted athletes is track cyclist LEUNG Chun-wing, who won a gold medal in men’s Madison and two silver medals in men’s Omnium and Team Pursuit respectively at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. He is now the assistant coach of the Hong Kong cycling team and will enrol in the management programme. “I hope to equip myself for my future career through studying at PolyU. Meanwhile, I will also take up a managerial role in the Hong Kong cycling team and develop diverse capabilities,” he remarked. KWOK Tsz-fung, the Hong Kong team’s substitute athlete in men's 500m short-track speed skating at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, will undertake the medical laboratory science programme. He said, “I was in high school amid the pandemic and aspired to study medical-related subjects to contribute to society. PolyU’s courses are well-recognised and pave the way for my healthcare career.” He hopes to keep up his professional level training alongside studies and represent PolyU to compete in the winter edition of the FISU World University Games. The first runner-up winner in the women’s Foil Team at the Junior World Cup, CHUNG Wan-yin, will study physiotherapy. She suffered an ankle ligament injury last year during training, leading to a two-month suspension of training. “I was taken good care of by the physiotherapist at that time, which inspired me to pursue this profession,” she said. With the all-round support from PolyU, she is eager to bring more victories for Hong Kong on the international stage. Swimmer CHAN Tsun-hin, who has participated in the Asian Open Water Swimming Championships, is now competing for the quota for the coming Asian Games in Hangzhou. He learnt about the Scheme through his brothers, who are also swimmers, and he will pursue aviation, maritime and supply chain management. “PolyU has devoted enormous resources to supporting student-athletes, allowing us to strike a balance between studies and training, and to realise dual-track development,” he said. PolyU’s Got Talent Lunchtime Show Series

In the month of March 2023, the PolyU campus was alive with the sound of music as the PolyU’s Got Talent (PGT) Lunchtime Show series took over for four consecutive Thursdays. The Logo Square was transformed into a stage showcasing the talent of PolyU students from diverse cultural backgrounds. From pop music to hip-hop, street dance and opera, the audience was treated to a vibrant and diverse display of talent. The lunchtime series brought peers together through Arts, Culture, and Talents for Sharing. The Programme not only provided a platform for students to shine, but also facilitated cross-cultural integration and fostered friendship among participants from Germany, India, Indonesia, Korea and beyond. It is a testament to the University's commitment to promoting student inclusion and strengthening multicultural exchange.  Overall, the PolyU’s Got Talent Lunchtime Show series was an unforgettable experience that showcased the incredible talent and diversity of the PolyU community.   

Appreciation Reception for Scholarship and Bursary Donors 2022/23

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held an appreciation reception on 14 April 2023 at the Global Student Hub on campus to thank donors who have set up scholarships and/ or bursaries for students in the academic year 2022/23. During the year, we are grateful to have received from over 270 donors a total of HK$43 million in the forms of scholarships /bursaries, financial assistance and subsidies for student activities, benefiting over 2,200 PolyU students. The event allowed the students to express their gratitude to donors in person. PolyU President Prof. Jing-Guang Teng and Chairman of PolyU Foundation Dr Sunny Chai, expressed their deepest appreciation to all donors for their continued support and guidance as PolyU works to create a favourable environment for educating the young generation. They also presented certificates of appreciation to donors who have supported the University’s scholarship/bursary scheme for over 15 years. Two talented scholarship awardees performed violin and yangqin recitals to express their heartfelt gratitude to the donors, which spiced up the event. Representatives from two donors, Croucher Foundation and Hong Kong Woollen and Synthetic Knitting Manufacturers’ Association, that have been supporting the University’s scholarship/ bursary scheme for over four decades, shared their beliefs and aspirations to support education and PolyU.
